Ciénaga de Mallorquín

The Mallorquín Swamp is the only ecosystem of its kind in the District of Barranquilla. Its biological importance is given by the mangrove ecosystem, sandy beaches and seabeds that comprise it, providing important ecosystemic and hydrobiological resources such as fish, oysters, chipi chipi and snails.

The Mallorquín swamp is a lagoon located in the northern end of Barranquilla, Colombia, on the western bank of the mouth of the Magdalena River, which is part of the 2,250 km² of the northern alluvial flood plain of said river. The fresh water of the Magdalena mixes with the salt water of the Caribbean Sea, forming an estuary-type wetland. In 2023, a tourist ecopark was developed on its southern edge.

It has an area of approximately 745 hectares, a perimeter of 11 km and a maximum depth of 1.3 m. The mangrove covers 298 ha.

It is located entirely in the northern end of the district of Barranquilla, on the left bank of the mouth of the Magdalena River (Bocas de Ceniza) in the Caribbean Sea.
